Competitive Dance Program
The Axis Centre for Dance approaches competitive dance from a holistic, dancer-centered perspective. Our main goal is to provide children who love dancing with an intensive program that will increase their technical skills while building values such as perseverance, dedication, teamwork, commitment, and hard work. We delight in our wins, but more important than that, we celebrate our dancers’ individual progress, the bonds they form with their teammates and teachers, and the joy of expressing themselves creatively through dance.
About the Axis Centre for Dance Competitive Program
Acceptance into the competitive program is by audition only. Dancers are evaluated on their technique and skills, ability to pick up choreography, and work ethic. Auditions for the competitive dance program are also used to evaluate dancers for placements in groups and in specialty routines such as solos, duets, trios, pullouts, and productions.
Dancers age 9 & up:
Weekly classes: 2 Ballet Classes
2 Technique Classes (includes Turns & Leaps and Conditioning/Stretch)
1.25 hours of Group Choreography rehearsal (3 dances)
Dancers age 12 and under cast in pull-outs must take 3 weekly ballet classes and acro.
Dancers age 8 & under (“Mini” Program):
Weekly classes: 1 Ballet Class
2 Technique Classes (including Turns & Leaps and Conditioning/Stretch)
1.5 hours of Group Choreography rehearsal (3 dances)
Depending on skill level and parental approval, some dancers age 8 and under will be placed in the program for older dancers. Similarly, it is possible that novice-level dancers who are 9 years old will be placed in the Mini Program.
All dancers are encouraged to take supplementary classes, which include tap, acro, aerial arts, pointe, flexibility/tricks, and hip-hop.
All dancers are eligible to dance in productions, lines, pullouts, solos, duets, and trios.
Competitions: Competitive program dancers participate in three to four regional competitions and one Nationals competition each year. These events are mandatory. Regional events have generally been held in Woodbridge, Manassas, Upper Marlboro, and Baltimore. There also will be opportunities to attend other local competitions and conventions. These events are highly encouraged, but not mandatory. Nationals locations that will receive consideration for the 2017-2018 season will be limited to the Poconos, PA; Ocean City, MD; Atlantic City, NJ and Virginia Beach, VA, Orlando, FL.
Showcase: Competitive program dancers are required to participate in the Axis end-of-year showcase, which is scheduled for late May or early June.
Master Classes: Axis will host master classes and workshops with guest teachers throughout the season. These classes are encouraged, but not mandatory. Most master classes have a small fee associated with them, with proceeds donated to the Dancers Against Cancer Foundation.
Dancers receive instruction in technique (Ballet, Acro, Conditioning/Stretch, and Turns/Leaps) and learn their 3 (2 for Mini dancers) group dances during a mandatory two-week (one week for Mini dancers) technique and choreography camp from the end of JULY through Mid August 2018. If your dancer has a conflict with this schedule, please talk to Noel to work out alternative arrangements.
Camp will run in two blocks (9:00 am to 3:00 pm; 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm), Monday through Friday and potentially Saturday, with early drop-off options available. The block for which a dancer is scheduled will depend on the dancer's group assignment. During camp, dancers will be measured for their competition costumes.
Choreography sessions for productions, lines, pullouts, and tap may be scheduled during the months of August and September, including weekends.
Tuition: Tuition is divided into 10 monthly payments (August 25 to May 25), to cover the following items:
All mandatory technique classes
All mandatory choreography rehearsal classes
Unlimited technique classes in any style
All additional group dance rehearsals (tap, productions, lines, and pullouts)
